چکیده

ÐWith ever increasing demands on bandwidth from emerging bandwidth-intensive applications, such as video conferencing, E-commerce, and video-on-demand services, there has been an acute need for very high bandwidth transport network facilities. Optical networks are a promising candidate for this type of applications. At the same time, many bandwidth-intensive applications require multicast services for efficiency purposes. Multicast has been extensively studied in the parallel processing and electronic networking community and has started to receive attention in the optical network community recently. In particular, as WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) networks emerge, supporting WDM multicast becomes increasingly attractive. In this paper, we consider efficient designs of multicast-capable WDM switching networks, which are significantly different and, hence, require nontrivial extensions from their electronic counterparts. We first discuss various multicast models in WDM networks and analyze the nonblocking multicast capacity and network cost under these models. We then propose two methods to construct nonblocking multistage WDM networks to reduce the network cost. Index TermsÐWavelength division multiplexing (WDM), optical networks, multicast, nonblocking, switching networks.

Literature Survey of nonblocking network topologies

The performance of a parallel computer greatly depends upon how, the different processors are capable of exchanging data. This, thus require an arbitrary permutation (nonblocking) to be done by the connection networks. A nonblocking network is capable of providing N parallel paths between a pair of nodes forming any arbitrary permutation. In this paper, we present three different simple nonbloc...

Wide-sense nonblocking multicast in a class of regular optical WDM networks

Multicast communication involves transmitting information from a single source node to multiple destination nodes, and is becoming an important requirement in high-performance networks. In this paper, we study multicast communication in a class of optical WDM networks with regular topologies such as linear arrays, rings, meshes, tori and hypercubes. For each type of network, we derive the neces...

Wide-sense and strict-sense nonblocking operation of multicast multi-log2 n switching networks

Multicast connections are used in broad-band switching networks as well as in parallel processing. We consider wide-sense and strict-sense nonblocking conditions for multi-log 2 switching networks with multicast connections in this paper. We prove that such networks are wide-sense nonblocking if they are design by vertically stacking at least 2 1 + 2 2 1 planes of a log 2 networks together, whe...

Nonblocking WDM switching networks with full and limited wavelength conversion

In recent years, with the rapid exhaustion of the capacity in wide area networks led by Internet and multimedia applications, demand for high bandwidth has been growing at a very fast pace. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a promising technique for utilizing the huge available bandwidth in optical fibers. In this paper, we consider efficient designs of nonblocking WDM permutation switc...

Multicast nonblocking switching networks

This letter considers three-stage switching networks for which nonblocking conditions with point-to-point traffic are given by the well known Clos theorem, under the assumption of absence of any optimized routing of the connections inside the network. We give here the conditions for such a network to be strictsense nonblocking under multicast traffic, by showing also that previously published p...
